Two Iowa FLL Challenge Teams Selected For GIA

Exciting News! Two Iowa FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge teams have been recognized as a top 20 global GIA team and will participate in the FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge Global Innovation Awards.

Official GIA Team Recognition Video

All Iowa FLL Challenge teams were considered for their innovative solutions through presenting at the virtual qualifier events. One team per qualifier was selected to present their innovations at the state level event where three teams were selected for further consideration to represent Iowa FLL. Two of those three teams have now made the finals out of hundreds of global teams. This is extremely exciting to have such talented, creative teams representing Iowa.

You can see all the names and home countries/states of recipients in the following video. You will see that there are global innovation nominees for the other FIRST programs (FTC, FRC), but our Iowa FLL teams are the only chosen to represent Iowa this year. This is a testament to the exceptional young people from these teams and the quality judging and advancement process.

2021 Global Innovation Award Finalists

Team #23579 – Cosmic Creators

Improving Baseball for the Blind and Visually Impaired

We learned of a sport called Beep Baseball (or Beepball), a version of baseball for the blind and visually impaired, that relies on beeping sounds to guide players to bases. We used white noise in place of beeps to improve some problems with Beepball. White noise is more locatable through background noise, easier to pinpoint a location, and is even easier for people who are losing their hearing to locate.
