FLL Challenge Events

Iowa FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge (FLL Challenge) Events aim to celebrate and demonstrate the incredible tasks that FLL Challenge teams have accomplished. FLL Challenge Events range in sizes from local qualifier tournaments to a worldwide FIRST Championship. At any FLL Challenge event, team members will learn the value of teamwork, problem-solving and STEM!

Important Remote Season Information

Due to COVID-19, All Iowa FLL Challenge Events (2020-2021) will be held in an online format. These events will work similar to the way events are normally run but will just be conducted virtually. We are committed to providing a great experience for our FLL Challenge Teams and the FLL Challenge community. More details on 2021-2022 events will be provided soon!

Types of FLL Challenge Events

  • Qualifying Tournaments

    When: Fall 2021 – More Information Coming Soon!

    Where: All Over Iowa

  • While generally Iowa FLL Challenge events take place throughout the FLL Season all over Iowa, last year events were held online. Iowa FLL Qualifying tournaments are a great chance for teams to display all the hard work the have put into the season. Teams will get to meet and present their ideas to a panel of judges to get valuable feedback on how to improve and further develop their projects. They will also participate in Robot Rounds where they send their robot to complete as many tasks as possible for points in a two minute and thirty second round. Teams will complete in multiple robot rounds in order to display their best score. A select number of teams can qualify out of a Qualifying tournament to the Iowa FLL Challenge Championships.

  • Iowa FLL Challenge Championships

    When: January 2022 – More Information Coming Soon!

    Where: Iowa State University Engineering Campus

  • Towards the end of the season, the Iowa FLL Challenge State Championship is held over one weekend on Iowa State University’s Engineering Campus. These events run similarly to the Qualifying Tournaments but at a larger scale. Teams that previously completed in Qualifying Tournaments and qualified to advance get to complete at the Championship on Saturday or Sunday. The Championships are the biggest event of the Iowa FLL Challenge season and is a huge celebration of youth robotics and STEM in Iowa. Last season, the Iowa FLL Challenge State Championship was held remotely in March 2021.

  • FLL Challenge World Festival

    Information for 2021-2022 Season Coming Soon!

  • FIRST holds a World Festival to celebrate FLL Challenge Teams from across the globe. Unfortunately, a FLL Challenge World Festival will not be held for the 2020-2021 season. In past years, teams were invited from State or Regional Championships through out the world to compete at this festival. The FLL Challenge World Festival is held in different locations each year and usually are comprised of two different events.
