Regional Qualifier FAQ’s

My team hadn’t decided on a team name when we registered for our Regional Qualifier.  How do I make sure our team name is correct at our event?

You have up until October 21st to log onto TIMS and change your team name. After October 21st the team name on TIMS is what will be used for any FLL Regional Qualifier promotional material.

The coach’s e-mail address and/or coach has changed and/or I need to add a co-coach to our team roster, who do I need to notify?

All team information changes need to be made in the FIRST® the team registration system.  It is very important that this information remains current as FIRST and ISU FLL distribute all important information to team contacts in this database.

If your coach information changes from what is listed on your Regional Qualifier registration form, please email fll@iastate.edu to ensure we have updated contact information in order to ensure your team gets all important information prior to attending an event.

My team owes $70.00 for regional event registration fees.  Who do I pay?

All regional event registration fees will be paid directly to Iowa State University (not regional organizers).

A university bill will be mailed to the Billing Address listed on the team’s regional event registration form.  Timely payment is expected to Iowa State University.  Please do NOT submit payment until a university bill is received.  The university bill will include a portion for you to remit with your team’s payment to ensure it is credited correctly.

What time will my regional event start and end?

Regional events typically start at 8:00 a.m. and end around 5:00 p.m.  Your team should plan to be at the event for the entire day, however, the total event time depends on the number of teams participating.  You will receive more information from the event organizer.

Where do I find more specifics about my regional event?

Each event has a regional organizer that leads the event site.  As the event nears, e-mailed communication will be sent from the regional organizer to the coaches’ e-mail addresses listed on the regional event registration form.

One of our team members is not able to attend the regional event.  Can we get an extra event medal for him/her?

Yes, the regional organizer can provide a medal for a team member is not able to attend the regional event.

What should I do in the case of inclement weather on the day of an event?

Check out our policy here: http://www.isek.iastate.edu/fll/fll-qa/weather-policy/

Will there be food at my regional event?

Specific event information will be provided by each regional organizer via e-mail.  However, most events offer a concession stand option for purchasing food during the event.

Teams are welcome to bring sack lunches.  However, for safety purposes, teams may not bring crockpots, popcorn machines, or other ‘cooking’ devices.  Please keep in mind our allergy policy available here.

What is the Student Team Information Member System?

FIRST requires all youth team members of FIRST programs to register in the Student Team Information Member System (STIMS).  This system will allow parents of FLL team members to register their child as being on a team, and electronically sign the FIRST Consent and Release Forms.  Click here to log on.

I am the coach of a team going to an event, what should I bring?

Outside of you and your team, you should bring your robot; snacks (that are not messy); money for concessions; Team Roster; “flair” to give away; and whatever you may need for your project.

Things you may bring, but are not necessarily recommended are a laptop for programming your robot.

YOU SHOULD NOT BRING THE FOLLOWING TO ANY EVENT: field set-up kit; any pieces from your field set-up kit; your mat; or your table.  Please also leave all of the obvious stuff at home like expensive items, anything dangerous, pets, etc.

How do I print the Team Roster, and why do I need it?

To print the Team Roster, access the Team Roster using the View button from the Team Summary Page in TIMS. Click the Printable Team Roster button.  This roster contains the FIRST Consent and Release Form status of your team members, and is needed at all events as proof that all children on the team have completed Consent and Release Forms on file with FIRST.  Anyone not indicated as having a completed form on file will need a hard copy of the Consent and Release Form to participate in the event.

Who do I contact with questions about the regional event?

Logistical questions about the regional event may be directed to the regional organizer, once he/she makes contact with the coaches.

All other questions – general FLL questions/concerns, project questions, etc. – should be directed to fll@iastate.edu.

What awards are given at Regional Competitions and how do teams advance to the state championship?

Every regional gives out official awards in the core areas (Core Values, Robot Design, Project), Robot Performance, and Champions Award.  Additional recognitions may also be given depending on the tournament.

Teams can only receive one core award at a tournament with the exception of the Robot Performance award.  For example, if your team receives an award for Project, you cannot also receive an award for Core Values, but you can win the Robot Performance award for having the highest score in the Robot Game.

The best overall, well-rounded teams will advance to the state championship.  Advancing teams will be evaluated based on performance across all areas (Core Values, Robot Design, Project), and teams must score in the top 40% in the robot performance in order to advance. You can view our full advancement policy here.

Participation medals will also be given to every participant.
