Start an FLL Team

Starting an FLL Team

So you want to be a coach?  Watch this short video on the role of a coach on an FLL team: Being a Coach

Getting Started

It is very easy to get started with FLL! First, you need to find a group of kids interested in participating. Teams can consist of 2-10 members, ages 9-14. You can form a team from any group of interested kids, after-school programs, neighborhood groups, youth organizations, or just a group of friends.

Next, you need to find two adult coaches. You don’t have to be a scientist or engineer to be a coach! Teachers, parents and technical professionals all make great coaches. The coach’s role is to assist the team in independent learning – not to directly assist the team in the problem-solving process.

You can find more information on starting a team on the official FIRST® LEGO® League website.

Finances

Annually, a team needs between $350-$370 to register as an FLL team ($225 FIRSTregistration, $75 Challenge Set, $50-$70 tournament registration). A new FLL team needs an additional $350+ to purchase a Mindstorms kit – this can be reused every year. If your team is just starting, we advise you to purchase the new Mindstorms EV3 kit.  You can purchase the kit through the public LEGO website ($350). Alternatively, you can purchase a kits specifically for FLL teams, available through the team registration system.  Please note, only coaches or designated purchasers for teams have access to this kit.  If a team member already has a Mindstorms NXT or EV3 kit, you are welcome to use that. You may want to purchase an extra motor and some sensors, however.

Registration

There are three steps to registering as a new FLL team.

  1. You need to register with FIRST by creating an account at www.firstinpires.org, and pay your FIRST registration fee. National team registration is open from May to October.
  2. Next, order your EV3 kit through your FIRST account and LEGO
    Education if needed.
  3. The third step is to register to participate in the Iowa Regional Qualifier system. Iowa Regional Qualifier registration typically opens at the beginning of October.
