Since forming in 2002, our Engineering Community Outreach programs have grown to reach over 30,000 people annually with over 700 FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) and FIRST LEGO® League Jr. (FLL Jr.) teams, making up the third largest engagement per youth capita in North American. Over 2000 volunteers collaborate with the college’s STEM efforts to impact future workforce development.

Programs work to increase the diversity of STEM students through various program offerings to K-12 audiences, such as Iowa State Engineering Kids. Youth participating in summer camp offerings included 30 percent-underrepresented minorities and nearly 50 percent female participants. Over 50 annual events are held in partnership with industry and civic organizations to increase reach to underserved communities. Increasing the gender equity in STEM is evidenced by strong female participation of nearly 40 percent in FLL Jr. with the program exceeding growth metrics for the third year in a row.

Our programs offer unique tailored consult to assist business and education partners on research-based best practice for student STEM engagement, connecting education and industry through development of STEM engagement goals, establishing clear metrics while providing outreach training for the greatest ROI.
