Qualifying Tournament Registration

Iowa FLL Challenge Event Registration

  • Registration for the 2021-2022 season (CARGO CONNECT) is now open!

Please note: Event registration is NOT first-come, first-served this year. We ask teams to register in a timely manner to ensure that Iowa FLL can work to accommodate one of the team’s top choices.

Teams will be asked to select their top three choices of qualifier events. There will be both in-person and virtual qualifiers offered beginning in mid-November and occurring through mid-December.

  • STEP 1: Register Online!

Qualifier registration opened on October 5 using an online form, this registration form is now closed. For up to date details on registration please email isek@iastate.edu. Iowa FLL will use the preferences provided by the team’s coach to place a team into an event. Teams will be notified with ample time prior to the qualifier event with information about their specific event.

A registration fee of $80 for in-person events and $60 for virtual events will be charged for this season’s qualifier events. Teams agree to be billed for the event upon submitting their Iowa FLL Challenge Qualifier registration.

To officially register teams, please be prepared to provide:

Due a minimum of TWO WEEKS Before Qualifier Event

All team members and coaches must have an ISU FLL Consent Form completed and submitted via the Iowa FLL Online Form. These forms are required to be completed before attending an Iowa FLL Event (in-person or virtual). Please send this link to each team member’s adult/parent along with the team number and coach name.

If your team needs paper copies or needs to correct an error in their form, please email fll@iastate.edu.

Get a jump on getting your team consent forms done now, if you have not done so already. No team members or coaches will be allowed to participate at an official Iowa FIRST® LEGO® League event without a completed Consent and Release form. Parents of youth participants, coaches and mentors need to fill out the new Consent and Release Form.

If you have any questions about registering for an Iowa FLL Challenge Qualifier Event, please email fll@iastate.edu.

2021-2022 CARGO CONNECT Iowa FLL Challenge Event Dates!

In-person Events

This year at each in-person qualifier event there will be a smaller number of teams competing at once with a maximum of 12 teams total.

Teams can expect: Your team will want to arrive and be ready 15 minutes prior to your first judging session. Each team will meet with the judges for 30 minutes followed by a 30-minute time block for the team’s 3 robot rounds. There will be no team pits, practice tables, or an in-person opening or closing ceremony. Coaches will receive medals upon arrival to the event venue that can be shared with the team, and there will be a remote award ceremony released by the following Monday after all teams have competed at Iowa FLL qualifier events for that week.

Specific to COVID mitigations: Masks will be highly encouraged in the event venue and spectators will be limited at all in-person events. Only the youth team members and 2 coaches will be permitted in the judging room. Teams will only be at the event for 1.5 hours. We ask teams to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled judging session and leave promptly after they finish competing.

Virtual Events

This year at each virtual event there will be a smaller number of teams competing in the event with a range of 6-12 teams.

The session will run as follows: Teams will log onto Zoom and spend 30 minutes with the judges. Judges will have the chance to ask the team questions related to their robot design, innovation project, as well as the students’ experience on the team (core values). Robot rounds videos will be submitted to Iowa FLL via Box. Robot Game Referees will be scoring teams based on the video submissions. After the event is competed, there will be a remote award ceremony released by the following Monday. There will not be a limit on the allotted spectators during the virtual event via Zoom.

Scheduling: Virtual events will be taking place on Tuesday evenings with teams being scheduled for a 30-minute judging session on the specific evening.

Events will either be in person or remote and can be held in the morning or afternoon. AM events will start around 9am and expect PM events to start around 1pm. Remember to pick three events that will work best for your team.

All events will have their own event page with relevant information for the event including schedules, locations and venue details. These event pages can be found using our ISEK Event Calendar and searching the town name corresponding to the event you are looking for.
